WCSO prepares for Labor Day Travel

We had the chance to talk with Williamson County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Captain, Rodney King, about plans to help keep the roads safe in preparation for holiday travel this Labor Day weekend.  We are thankful that the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to making the roads safe.

Captain King said that additional deputies will be on patrol looking for impaired drivers and others who are violating traffic laws throughout the holiday weekend. There is a scheduled sobriety roadside checkpoint this Friday, August 30, 2019 9 p.m. – 11 p.m. Highway 96 East @ North Chapel. State Law requires these times and locations to be released to the public.

“We want people to understand that these checkpoints are designed to help people,” said King. “Hopefully, it will also encourage people to drive more responsibly. It’s more about the message than it is about the enforcement.”

King urges everyone to drive responsibly and to use a designated driver.

“If you are going to be out drinking, or even if you are just feeling tired from the long weekend, have someone else do the driving,” said King. “Be responsible. It’s better to find alternate transportation than to get behind the wheel while intoxicated.”

A reminder that the Hands Free Law went into effect, July 1, 2019. Officers will now be fully enforcing the law; the grace period is up. King said that cell phone use will be one of the things officers will be watching for at the checkpoints.

“It only takes a split second for an accident to occur,” said King.

Labor Day is one of the busiest times the sheriff’s office sees during the year. King encourages people to get out earlier and find alternate routes that might be less congested.

Drivers should also be patient on the roads and take their time.

“There is nothing in this world that is worth rushing to,” said King.

King also reminds drivers to consider the big trucks that are on the roads. Big trucks haul heavy loads. It takes them much longer to come to a stop. If a smaller car pulls out in front of them, they may loose control trying to stop.

“We just want to make sure everyone makes it home safely,” said King.
